Electric Car History

  • In 1989 Ferdinand Porsche built the first hybrid car, the System Lohner-Porsche Mixte.
  • The first mass-produced, purpose-built modern electric car was the EV1, released by General Motors in 1996.
  • The self-driving police vehicles featured in the movie Demolition Man (1993) were sourced from the General Motors Ultralite program, which evolved into the EV1.
  • The world's first mass-produced hybrid electric vehicle was the Prius, released in Japan in 1997.
  • The Toyota Prius remains the most popular hybrid in the world. Toyota has sold more than 15 million hybrids globally since the launch of the first-generation Prius.
  • According to current rates, in 2035 about 45% of new car sales could be electric, with roughly half of the cars on the road to be electric by 2050.

 

 

Global Electric Car Stats

  • In 2019 electric cars accounted for 2.6% of global car sales and about 1% of global car stock, registering a 40% year-on-year increase.
  • Global battery electric vehicle sales more than doubled from 2020 to 2021.
  • Between 2020 and 2026, the size of the global electric vehicle market is expected to increase over 4 times, reaching an estimated size of one trillion U.S. dollars by 2026.
  • In 2021, 6.5 million EVs were sold worldwide, up 109% from 2020.
  • Tesla was the best-selling electric vehicle brand in 2021, selling over 936 thousand plug-in electric vehicles (PEV) globally.

UK Electric Car Stats

  • The United Kingdom is the third-largest European market in terms of PEV and light vehicle sales.
  • In 2020 UK plug-in electric vehicle sales grew by around 140% year-on-year.
  • Mitsubishi's Outlander PHEV is the UK’s most popular plug-in vehicle according to figures from June 2020, making it the best-selling plug-in car for more than five years.
  • The best-selling pure-EV in the UK is the Nissan Leaf, according to 2020 Department of Transport figures.
  • Comparing Jan-April 2022 vs the previous year, UK Battery Electric Vehicles car registrations grew 88.3%

  • As of the end of February 2022, there were more than 780 thousand plug-in vehicles registered in the UK, nearly 420,000 BEVs and 360,000 PHEVs registered.
  • Between the end of 2016 and 2020, there was a 220% increase in the number of public electric vehicle charging points.
  • The UK Government plans 300,000 public electric vehicle charge points by 2030 – 5 times the number of fuel pumps in existence in 2022.

 

 

Future Electric Car Predictions

  • BMW estimates introducing roughly a dozen new EVs to market by 2025.
  • American Honda Motor Co. aims for carbon-neutrality, with all its sales to be zero-emissions electrified vehicles by 2040.
  • General Motors is developing an Ultium battery system for optimised long-range electric travel, for an estimated range of 300+ miles on a full charge with 0-60 mph in as low as 3 seconds.
  • General Motors is making moves to an all-electric model lineup by 2035, aiming for 20 EVs available in the U.S. by 2025.
  • Starting in 2025, all new Mercedes-Benz vehicles will be electric-only. Mercedes plans to set up eight giga-factories with partners to produce batteries for these new models.
  • Ford claims it will produce more than 2 million EVs annually by 2026 and projects that electric vehicles will constitute half of its global sales volume by 2030.
  • Hyundai has committed to becoming carbon-neutral by 2045, with a hydrogen fuel-cell system in 100-kilowatt and 200-kW variations that will launch in 2023.
  • Hyundai aims for its fuel-cell vehicles to be priced closely to battery electric vehicles by 2030. 
  • By 2030 Nissan forecasts that 40% of its sales in the U.S. will be EVs.
  • Jaguar aims for an all-electric lineup by 2025.
  • Genesis car brand pledged all new vehicles to be purely electric starting from 2025.
